The Gadget Coat, or the Inflatable Coat, is one of the many gadgets used by Inspector Gadget.
History[]
His trench coat inflates to massive proportions when he pulls one of its buttons and enables him to float — in water or in the sky. This is the one gadget that acts independently of his body, as the coat has the ability to be inflated on its own without him wearing it. Once inflated, he has little control over where he floats off to, and sometimes he'll use his gadget copter, other gadgets or swim through the air. There isn't really any rhyme or reason as to how big the coat can get, and varies by the situation.
The Gadget Coat is fairly reliable and doesn't spring a leak on its own. It can take quite a bit of abuse, such as being bounced between ships before rupturing. Typically, it is almost always deflated by being punctured, usually causing him to shoot through the sky as the air is released before falling from a great height. On occasion, he does control the deflation of his trench coat by activating the air release to deflate it, pulling one of the buttons to let the air out, or it deflates automatically on its own. Brain has activated the Gadget Coat by pulling one of the buttons from time to time in order to save Gadget. In a few cases the trench coat has the ability to heal itself where it gets punctured, and shortly it's inflated again without any obvious change in coat; or in other cases it's completely destroyed, and a new coat will be needed.
- In "Winter Olympics," Gadget calls it the Gadget Blimp.
- In "Movie Set," Gadget calls it the Gadget Raincoat.
- In "The Japanese Connection", there is a scene where Gadget uses his Gadget Coat to fight off some sumo wrestlers, while also activating his Gadget Magnets to not float away.
- The Gadget Coat can be activated without pulling one of the buttons, as seen in "Fang the Wonder Dog."
- Penny has activated the Gadget Coat remotely through her computer book as seen in season #2, "Gadget's Gadgets"
- She also uses it directly in "Snakin' All Over", weaponizing it against a snake that was about to finish off Gadget.
- In Inspector Gadget's Last Case, the Gadget Coat is referred as the Inflatable Jacket.
- In Gadget and the Gadgetinis, the Gadget Coat is referred as the Balloon Coat.
- The Gadget Coat is also seen during the intro of the original cartoon.
- A compilation of all season one where he inflates his coat can be found here. Season two can be found here.
