"Health Spa" is the 6th episode of the first season of Inspector Gadget. It is the 7th episode in production order.

Synopsis[]

After reviewing Gadget's file, Quimby awards his top police inspector with some well-deserved time off, which couldn't have come at a better time since Gadget has just won a week's stay at the Bide-A-Wee Health Spa. Suspicious that her uncle has won a prize in a contest he didn't even enter, Penny naturally has Brain follow him. Penny's intuition proves right: The free vacation is a trap set by Claw to get rid of Gadget.

Arriving at the rundown health spa, the inspector meets Madame, the spa's tall, angular, and attractive proprietress. With the help of two of Claw's thugs, she puts Gadget through a rigorous workout, with each exercise aimed at doing him in. However, Gadget's own clumsiness and Brain's help succeed in thwarting their every effort. More attempts ― all fruitless ― are made on Gadget's life in a steam room, as well as a torture chamber. 

Meanwhile, Penny is captured while snooping around outside, but she manages to escape, thanks to Brain's help. She soon finds a huge stash of stolen jewels in the bowels of the building and calls Chief Quimby. Upstairs in the dining room, Brain does his best to prevent Gadget from ingesting any drugged food that Madame serves him. But after she serves Gadget a cake made of dynamite, Penny and Brain both rush to their uncle and throw the explosive dessert out the window just in time. Quimby arrives with back-up to arrest the M.A.D. agents, collect the stolen jewels, and congratulate Inspector Gadget on another job well done.

The epilogue has Gadget and Penny discuss basic fitness tips, on how you can get in shape right in your own home.

Trivia[]

  • An episode of the 2015 series has its own version of this episode.
  • This is one of the few episodes where Gadget does not get an assignment on a self-destructing message. Instead, after Quimby instructs Gadget from his file cabinet drawer to take a vacation, among Gadget seemingly leaving, Quimby sighs and says, "At last, an assignment that didn't blow up in my face," only for Gadget to slam the door open in his face.
  • In a scene when Gadget is about to hit a punching bag, he says, "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee", a quote made famous by renowned former heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali.
  • In another scene, Gadget says, "All work and no play makes Gadget a dull boy", a line referring to the film The Shining.
  • This is the first episode in broadcast order where Penny gets captured.
  • This is the second episode where Gadget says, "Scratch one M.A.D. agent," after mistaking Brain for a M.A.D. agent and dispatching him. The first was "Winter Olympics". He would later say a variation on the line in "Launch Time" after taking out three security guards he similarly mistook for M.A.D. agents.
  • Animation of Gadget opening the door on Chief Quimby, Brain acting out Madame's plan to drug Gadget, and Quimby congratulating Gadget on uncovering M.A.D.'s stash of stolen jewels was reused for the closing credits sequence.

Goofs[]

  • Cel layer mistake: After Gadget breaks the sauna door for the second time, the steam escaping from the room appears in front of M.A.D. Agent Fred's face, but only the part of his face that is standing in front of the door opening. The animation cel with the steam should have been layered beneath that of Fred instead of in front of him.
  • Continuity: As Gadget sits at a table waiting for his dinner, his brown gloves are flesh colored. The are brown when Gadget is shown from the back, but flesh colored again in the next shot.
