M.A.D. Trap" is the 20th episode of Inspector Gadget.
Synopsis[]
Claw explains to M.A.D. Cat that Gadget always appears at the scene of crime, which he says is really quite simple. He says he'll lead Gadget to his lair himself this time and that the crime is Gadget's elimination.
There has been so little crime in Metro City lately that Chief Quimby has temporarily closed down the police department. Bored and depressed, he sits in the park, feeding the birds. Gadget tracks him down, looking for an assignment. Quimby tells Gadget that a cheese store was just robbed downtown and Gadget huffs, "A cheese store?! But I'm the world's greatest inspector!". Reluctantly, he takes the case and is soon on the trail of the Rat, a 2-bit criminal in a black leather jacket Claw has hired. The rodent-like crook continues his crime spree by stealing candy from a baby, burglarizing a toy store, and robbing an appliance store. Gadget collects the cards (all bearing the M.A.D. logo) the thief leaves behind and he sets out to crack the case. Penny is suspicious, wondering why Claw would be involved in such petty burglaries. Plotting the crimes' locations on a map, she sees that, once connected with lines, they spell out, "MAD." Unaware that it's a trap, she has Brain lure her uncle to a sheet metal factory ―the scene of the last crime.
The episode ends with Gadget going back to his workout as he and Penny discuss on how exercise keeps you in good shape.
Trivia[]
- This is the first of four episodes where Dr. Claw is voiced by Don Francks.
- This is one of the very few times where Gadget is actually competent and useful. He uses his gadgets and skills to solve the case, escape the sheet metal factory and rescue Penny all by himself.
- Ironically, in some Season 2 episodes and in the 2015 series, Claw does commit petty crimes, along with many of his schemes largely focusing on getting rid of Gadget.
- This is one of the few episodes where Gadget does not get an assignment on a self-destructing message. Instead, Gadget finds Quimby sitting in the park feeding pigeons due to the lack of work, and it is instead Gadget that gives Quimby a self-destructing message asking him for work. Among panicking, Quimby drops it near the birds, and when trying to get the birds away from the message, it explodes in his face as per usual.
