Inspector Gadget Wiki

Nervous Nick DeFecto is a character in Inspector Gadget.

History[]

Nervous Nick Defecto was a Top M.A.D. Agent who got so distressed about working for Dr. Claw that he decided to give himself in at the Metro City police station. Upon entering the station, he evaded Penny and Brain at the door, and asked Inspector Gadget where he could find Chief Quimby. Gadget did not recognize Nick, despite having just pinned a wanted poster onto a bulletin board, and directed him to go right down the hall, to the last office. Realizing that M.A.D. would try to elliminate Nick, Quimby assigned Inspector Gadget to protect Nick. When Gadget visited DeFecto in his cell, the former Top M.A.D. agent was dismayed to learn they had only assigned one man to protect him.

Meanwhile, two of Nick's former colleagues, Abdul and Pops, were ordered by Claw to eliminate Nick. They began digging an underground tunnel that led straight into Nick's jail cell. Expecting something like this, Nick laid his ear to the floor of his cell to listen and was convinced he could hear them coming. Gadget told him it was just nearby construction and left the cell. When Abdul and Pops broke into the cell, Nick pushed himself against the bars. The cell doors opened just in time for him to slip out (thanks to Penny's computer book) and were then slammed shut again in Abdul and Pops' faces, causing them to fall back into the hole they had climbed out of. Nick ran up to Inspector Gadget, who had accidentally been locked behind bars himself. Nick grabbed on to the bars, which slid open, leading him to hit his head and fall to the ground. Gadget then helped him up and told Nick to stick with him. Nick showed Gadget the hole in the floor of his cell, but Gadget thought it had been caused by an earthquake. Because they were both huddled close to the ground, a missile shot by Claw from his M.A.D. Mobile missed its target and flew over them. Screaming with fear, Nick was picked up by Gadget, who used his Gadget Skates and carried Nick to his Gadget Van, because he felt the station was not earthquake proof.

Accident-prone Nick was hit in the head by Gadget when Penny and Brain suddenly appeared behind them. Nick decided it would be safer for him back inside the station, and ran to the door, but Gadget grabbed him, using his extending arm. He insisted on taking Nick to a safe place and Cuffed him to himself while waiting for the Chief's instructions. Meanwhile, Claw had kidnapped Quimby and put him on ice in an old abandoned ice factory. Quimby still managed to call Gadget on the Top-Secret Gadget Phone, but because of his chattering teeth and some interference arranged by Claw, Gadget misheard Quimby's words completely, and now thought he was supposed to "hide DeFecto in a sold factory that's run down, and play bridge with him". Nick was pushed into the back of the Gadget Van, but since he was cuffed to Gadget's arm, Gadget pulled him out again when he tried to close the vehicle's back door. Gadget assumed Nick tried to escape from him, while in reality it was Gadget's own doing that Nick couldn't remain in one place until the Inspector decided to enter his van through the back at the same time as Nick.

During their drive to the factory, Gadget released Nick from the cuffs after he promised he would not try to run for it. They entered the abandoned factory, which Gadget thought was a perfect hiding place. But the place was falling apart, and Nick got scared of receiving an accident again. He tried to get out, but this time Gadget used his Gadget Lasso to grab him. Then another M.A.D. Agent, Squirt began to use a bulldozer equipped with a wrecking ball to bring the building down on top of Nick and Gadget. A friendly construction worker (Brain in disguise) tried to get DeFecto to leave, but was unsuccessful. Gadget realized the factory was a dangerous place and that Quimby must have meant them to go to another hiding place. He led DeFecto back to his van, and began to search for a bridge. Stopping in the middle of the nearest bridge, Gadget got himself thrown off when the bridge opened to let a ship passed underneath. Nick broke down and started crying as he held on to the open bridge. When Gadget returned, DeFecto refused to come with him, but was pulled along. On the other side of the bridge, M.A.D. agent Pops had rigged a mountainside to come down on the Gadget Van and crush him. But the explosives went off too soon (thanks again to Penny and her computer book), leaving Gadget and Nick unharmed, but unable to travel any further by car.

Together they walked to the old Ice Factory, which was filled with ice on the inside. Nick began to slip around on the icy floor, and was once again cuffed by Gadget. But Claw froze the Inspector in a large block of ice and did the same to Brain (Chief Quimby had already undergone this procedure). Claw then the large blocks of ice transferred by crane to a conveyor belt where they would be sliced into icecubes. Nick, still cuffed to Gadget, was outside the ice, but found himself being dragged along and placed on the conveyor belt as well. Penny and her book managed to take control of the machinery and reverse it, causing the blocks of ice to be smashed against a wall, releasing their occupants, but crushing Nick against the wall. Penny pushed what remained of the blocks outside, so that the bottom parts of them could melt in the sun. As Quimby and Gadget regained their composure, Nick was still cuffed to the Inspector and chattering his teeth.
