Penny has a utility wristwatch that is equipped with an array of systems, including a video communication system linked to Brain's collar, so she can get in contact with him, or she can contact Chief Quimby. Other features include: a laser, magnet, flashlight, sonar signal, jamming system, a system that allows Penny to crack combinations or open certain doors, remote control, and many other things.
The only episode where Penny does not use her watch at all, either directly or indirectly, is episode 21, "Basic Training".
Penny's watch briefly malfunctioned in Down on the Farm, when she tried to contact Brain, its middle button crackled. Also in Photo Safari, Penny used her watch to shut the Black Devil down for good, but while doing so, she pressed the wrong button on it by mistake, which caused the Black Devil to breath fire, before rolling over on its back, completely shut down.
Videophone :
This is really the basic function of this watch, its main function, the one that is shown in the opening credits of the cartoon (at 0 min 46 s), and which is used in almost all episodes.
Penny uses it to contact her dog Brain, or the police, or even any interlocutor with an appropriate terminal, such as her Japanese correspondent Atsuko (30. The Japanese Connection : 15 min, 0 s).
When the videophone does not work, this watch has an adapter cord allowing it to connect to a transmitter, to amplify its signal and/or send radio messages (42. M.A.D. Academy : 18 min 35 s).
The only two episodes where Penny does not use this "videophone" function are episode 21, "Basic Training", and episode 56, "Weather in Tibet".
