Pops is one of Dr. Claw's agents in Inspector Gadget.
Routine[]
Pops is a M.A.D. agent who appears in various disguises on several missions.
Personality[]
Pops is good at being a master of disguises, and he is malicious and cruel like his fellow M.A.D. agents. He speaks in a raspy voice.
History[]
Together with Jarvis, Abdul, Dick and Squirt, Pops posed as a member of Amazon Annie's tribe while stationed in the Amazon jungle. As such, he wore only a grass skirt and sandals and had a small bone decorating his nose. After Inspector Gadget accepted Annie's invitation to attend the tribe's Amazon sacrificial ritual, Pops performed a ritual dance together with Jarvis and Squirt. Together, they changed a song which sounded suspiciously like the Inspector Gadget theme. All of them were scared off by a brown gorilla (actually Brain in disguise) but soon resumed their efforts. However, Dr. Claw himself ordered Amazon Annie to stop the liquidation as he needed Gadget at his Aztec Temple hideout. Disappointed, the entire M.A.D. tribe was left behind in the jungle.[1]
Pops, wearing a red eyepatch with the M.A.D. logo on it, stole the outfit of a sailor on a cruise ship and took his place. The entire crew was taken over by M.A.D. Agents. When Inspector Gadget boarded the ship wearing a disguise, Pops and Fred demanded to see his invitation. Fred got himself stuck in an air pipe on the deck of the ship, but Pops pulled him out. When they realized that Gadget had given them a laundry ticket instead of a real invitation, they threw him off the ship, back onto the harbour.[2]
Pops was addressed by Dr. Claw as "Agent Number 3" while stationed at Claw's M.A.D. Music studio. Pops grabbed a young pigtailed intruder who was snooping around and locked her in the basement. When all the lights and electricity failed, Claw asked Pops what was going on. Pops informed Claw that all the fuses had blown and was ordered to use the emergency backup. Later, after Gadget entered M.A.D. Music's headquarters, Claw ordered Fred, Pops and Bruce to guard all exits. But when Chief Quimby's men arrived outside, Pops informed Dr. Claw that the cops were coming and made a run for it.[3]
Identified as Agent Number 2, posing as a bearded Indian native, Pops rode a flying carpet and informed Dr. Claw he was ready to drop glue bombs on Inspector Gadget. But Brain was stuck in a large rolling drum and collided with Pops, causing the flying carpet to crash. Brain ended up in the broken drum, covered in glue together with M.A.D. Agent Abdul.[4]
Together with Squirt, Pops removed a sign from a road that warned drivers about the edge of a cliff while fellow agent Abdul was chasing the Gadgetmobile across the Egyptian desert. The Gadgetmobile drove off the cliff, but remained unharmed thanks to its parachute attachment. [5]
Pops was stationed on Dr. Claw's fake Island base together with fellow agents Fred and Dick. The entire setup was a front to create large doses of a powerful sleeping gas. When Gadget dropped in on the island, Pops was ordered to cover the entire area to prevent Gadget's escape. The M.A.D. Agents used large leaves from the local fauna to protect their mouths and noses from inhaling the gas themselves.[6]
Pops drove a M.A.D. speedboat on the lake on the grounds of the Greenfinger Institute. His fellow agent Abdul was in the back ready to launch several rocket-shaped bombs at Inspector Gadget, who was driving another speedboat. Abdul ordered Pops to turn when Gadget changed direction, then to go faster. Both of them ducked when a fellow M.A.D. Agent, who was being pulled along by Gadget's boat, was catapulted into the air and nearly collided with them. This made Pops lose control of the boat, which crashed on the riverbank and into a tree. Although the agents were disoriented and drowsy, Dr. Claw ordered them to continue their pursuit. They managed to get the battered boat back in the water and shot another three rockets at it, causing a large explosion. Abdul told Pops "Scratch one Gadget" and both laughed as they continued down the river, certain they had completed their assignment. They were arrested by Quimby's men after the police arrived on the scene.[7]
Operating a crusher that squeezed cars into neat cubes of trash, Pops indicated he was ready for his next victim when Lenny picked up the Gadgetmobile with a magnet-equipped crane and deposited it in Pops' crusher. Pops told the inspector "Bye Bye Flatfoot", but Gadget escaped, after which both Lenny and Pops were ordered to go after him by Claw. Pops drove an articulated haulier, but ended up being stopped when a load of trash from Lenny's crane was mistakenly shot down by a stray laser bolt from Gadget, leaving Pops in the mud.[8]
Together with fellow Agents Dick and Fred, Pops was preparing boobytraps in the farmhouse they knew Inspector Gadget would be using as a retreat. Jarvis was on lookout duty, hidden within a haystack. Pops was rigging the TV Set and the breadbox to explode as soon as it was turned on. When Jarvis informed them that Gadget had arrived, the other agents jumped out of the nearest window. Pops was the first one out. The four of them reported back to Dr. Claw, who angrily explained that he wanted Gadget to end up behind bars for life, not eliminated, and ordered them to save the Inspector from all the traps they had laid for him.
Pops snuck back into the house through the window, removed the explosives from the back of the TV and climbed into the empty set when Gadget got near. Pops pretended to be a newscaster without any sound, but got electrocuted when Gadget plugged the set into a socket. That evening, Pops and Fred worked together to sprinkle fake snow down in front of one of the windows from the roof. This way, Gadget would stay inside the house because of the bad weather. When they ran out of fake snow, they began to use all kinds of balls, from ping-pong to the basketball variety. When Gadget left in his van, Dick told Fred and Pops to drop everything and get in the back of his green truck. They picked up Jarvis and went in pursuit.
Gadget was soon arrested because his robot double had been busy robbing the Metro City bank. Dr. Claw ordered Pops and Fred to break Gadget out of jail so he would receive the blame when his double kidnapped the Shah of Freeland. Meanwhile, Dick and Jarvis were driving another vehicle, a red van, that contained the robot double to the airport. The two vehicles almost collided on the mountain pass, and Penny, who had stowed away in the red van, made the robot double change clothes with her uncle, confusing the M.A.D. agents. Pops told Jarvis to watch where he was going, then grabbed the robot double by the arm, thinking it to be the real Gadget, and took it back to Claw's Castle. Claw immediately recognized the robot when it was brought before him by Pops and Fred, and called them both idiots.[9]
Pops was stationed at La Scampi Opera House and reported to Claw that a stranger was snooping around. He was ordered to give Inspector Gadget a free exploding ticket to the Opera. But Gadget lost the ticket to a gust of wind. While trying to retrieve it, Gadget inadvertently caused a wooden promotion shaped like the Opera's star singer Carlotta to drop onto Pops. Pops then ordered fellow agent Dick to make sure Gadget got his ticket back. Gadget returned just in time to catch the matinee performance and deposited the ticket at Pops' booth, where it exploded in his face.
When the Opera started, Pops was ordered by Claw to begin phase one: he activated the dish aimed at the Pizza King's walls to melt them when powered by Luciano's singing plant. Dr. Claw noticed that Gadget was snooping in the basement and ordered all agents to get him. Dick asked Pops to help him aim a large cannon at Gadget as he was about to enter an elevator. Brain saved the Inspector's life by attempting to adjust the cannons' aim, then pushed Gadget as he entered the elevator, causing his Gadget Mallet to deflect the cannonball right back at Pops and Dick. When an alarm went off on the dish machinery, Pops and Dick reported this to Claw, who reminded them to get Gadget instead. Luciano told them that he would keep Gadget center stage, so they could drop a weight on Gadget's head. But thanks to Brain's interference, the weight hit Luciano in the face instead. Luciano was about to grab Brain when Pops and Dick let loose another weight, and Luciano found his legs had been tangled up in the rope attached to this weight, causing him to be pulled up into the rafters. He told Pops and Dick to get Gadget off the stage before the singing plant was discovered. The two of them caused a grand piano to fall from the rafters onto the stage, but this time Brain activated a turntable in the stage floor to ensure the safety of both Gadget and Carlotta. Luciano was not amused and told them to get to the control room and protect the plant.
Inside the control room, Pops and Dick noticed a young girl snooping around and trapped her in a small room when she tried to hide. Pops used a key to lock her inside. By this time the dish and singing plant had opened up a substantial hole in the door to the Pizza King's vault, and Dick and Pop could look inside to see the Jewelled Pizza. But [Gadget's niece was set free by her dog and used her computer book to short-circuit the machine. Dr. Claw told them to stop trying to get the dish to work again, and grab the pizza instead. But when both of them stuck their hands through the hole in the wall, they were handcuffed together by a local Carabinieri, who had entered the vault together with Chief Quimby. Shortly, Pops and Dick were led into a police van, soon to be joined by Luciano.[10]
Pops posed as the proprietor of a marine shop on the beach near Metro City. He was ordered by Dr. Claw to finish off Inspector Gadget. When the Inspector entered the shop, he asked if Pops knew anything about the disappearing oceanographers. Pops replied he didn't, as it had been pretty quiet around his beach, because of the sharks. When Gadget asked if Pops sold bazookas, Pops recommended a speargun instead. Pops intended to fire the speargun at Gadget, but thanks to Brain's interference, he got hit in the face with the speargun (which had a boxing glove attached to it) himself. Gadget then decided he would just take some flippers.
Later, Pops and Fred took a M.A.D. sub from their boating house and headed for the underwater base. They were unaware that Penny went along as a stowaway. Inside the base, they dressed in M.A.D. uniforms and allowed Penny to overhear Dr. Claw's plans involving the launch of a spy satellite. They were arrested by the police after Gadget successfully freed the oceanographers and Penny caused the satellite missile to malfunction.[11]
Together with a M.A.D. Pirate, Pops served as a pirate on Pegleg Peg's ship. The pair of them had great trouble understanding Pegleg's orders. First, they were ordered by her to fire the cannon as a practice round, but they only managed to blow up the cannon instead. Then they board Captain Malcolm's cruise ship. The two of them were unable to swing onto the ship, swinging right back to Pegleg's boat. Brain, now disguised as a pirate, was more successful.
Soon, the billionaires had all been tied to the mast and were being persuaded to sign over all of their belongings to Pegleg Peg. However, they still thought the pirates were putting on a show, and that Inspector Gadget, who arrived using his Gadget 'Copter, was participating as well. Gadget and Brain ended up sitting high upon one of the ship's masts, while Pops and his pirate colleague climbed up, armed with weapons. From the other side, M.A.D. Agents Dick and Bruce, who had been posing as members of the cruise ship's crew, did the same. However, when Gadget announced they were nearing an island they decided to take all the captives on land instead.
Pops and the other pirate forced Gadget to walk the plank of an alligator pit. Thinking he was part of a show, Gadget did not fear the "rubber alligators" and was saved by a little hula girl (Brian in disguise), ending up catapulted to safety. Pops, the bearded pirate, Dick and Bruce were sent after him. When Brain stole the documents the billionaires had signed to give their fortunes to Dr. Claw and became the agent's next target. Having climbed into a palm tree, Pops almost caught Brain, but was accidentally thwarted by Gadget and catapulted into the air. He landed next to a Texan millionaire, who hogtied Pops in two seconds.[12]
Pops became one of the students at Dr. Claw's M.A.D. Academy, and was referred to by Claw as one of his 'kids'. Before classes properly started, Abdul was wearing a standard M.A.D. uniform. When Claw ordered Agent No 3 to flip the control switch, Pops changed into a school uniform. Claw then asked the class to repeat their school motto "We hate Gadget".
Some time later, Pops was armwrestling Dick while Lenny looked on. Dr. Claw informed them that Gadget was coming and told them to show him what they've learned. Pops posed as a toll booth operator. When Inspector Gadget drove up in his Gadgetmobile, Pops attached a lit bomb to a spring and slid it into the window of Gadget's vehicle. Gadget put the correct change underneath the bomb and returned it, then drove off. Pops, who was waiting for the explosion with fingers in his ears, noticed the Gadgetmobile had left, and the bomb exploded in his face. Dr. Claw scolded Pops, Lenny and Dick for failing to eliminate Gadget, told them to study harder for their next test and ordered them back to the academy. Lenny and Dick rode a tandem to school with Pops sitting awkwardly in the middle. They passed the Gadgetmobile and entered the academy by a secret door with Gadget hot on their tail. They managed to lose the Inspector, who assumed they had special training and that they had entered the local police academy.
They next met up with Gadget in the office of the M.A.D. Principal. Gadget assumed they were colleagues from the Police Academy doing a refresher course, and the Principal told the trio to show Gadget around the facilities. Their tour led them to the bomb disposal unit, where Principal handed Gadget a time bomb to dispose of. All four M.A.D. agents hid behind some sandbags. When Gadget thought he had successfully disarmed what he thought was a fake bomb, he put it on the table and left. The four agents came out of hiding to check it out, and the bomb exploded in their faces.
Next, the three students were present as the Principal invited Gadget to drive his Gadgetmobile through a timed obstacle course backwards. As Gadget started his engine, all four agents were covered in mud. Angrily, the Principal ordered his students to "prepare for their lessons". They did so by manning a tank and attempting to blast the Gadgetmobile during the course. Pops was driving the tank. When he told the others to prepare to fire, Brain altered the trajectory of the cannon so that it wouldn't hit Gadget. They managed to knock Brain off the tank using its cannon. Just after Gadget had to stop his vehicle after using his glue gun by mistake, Penny took control of the tank using her computer watch. The tank changed direction, exiting the academy through a wall. Surprised, the three agents stuck their heads out of the top hatch to see what was going on and found themselves crashing into some shacks on the street. [13]
Designated "Agent Y", Pops disguised himself as a little old lady, knowing that Inspector Gadget would not be able to resist a "lady in distress". He drove a truck filled with melons in the back, and stopped by the side of the road, where thick black smoke emitted from the engine compartment. Gadget did indeed offer to help, and one of the Gadget hands extended out of his hat, gallantly holding a smaller hat, which in turn produced another Gadget Hand that also held a hat. Agent Y tried to hit the Inspector on the head with a large wrench, but was sprayed in the face with oil after Gadget loosened a valve next to the motor of Pop's vehicle. Gadget noticed the wrench, which had fallen to the ground, and decided to use it. He also used another of his Gadget Hands to wipe Pops' face clean, but did not manage to get all of the oil off of Pops. Pops then tried to have the bonnet of his car hit Gadget on the head, but Gadget, thinking he had found the problem, pulled Pops under the bonnet himself, leading both of them to be hit on their heads. A postman (actually Brain in disguise) saw their predicament and freed them both, af which point Gadget announced that he had fixed the problem. Pops found himself being catapulted backwards and landed on his behind. He took off his left shoe and charged at Gadget, but the postman stopped him, leading Inspector Gadget to scold the postman for mistreating a lady. Pops tried to hit the postman with his shoe, but it ended up on his own head instead. The Postman ran to his bicycle and left, but an angered Pops got behind the wheel of his truck and bumped the postman's bicycle from behind.
Pops arrived at M.A.D.'s New Foods Dairy company only moments before Inspector Gadget did. When Dr. Claw told all agents to be on the lookout for Gadget, Pops joined Jarvis and Dick (who were both dressed as farmhands) in spying on Gadget. Having seen Gadget enter a barn, they pushed a large bull in after him. They watched from a distance as the bull attacked Gadget several times. Then Claw contacted them again, saying Gadget was stealing their profits. A short while later, Claw noticed a young girl snooping around and ordered Pops to stop the intruder on the Silo. Pops chuckled wickedly as he watched the young girl climbing down the ladder of the silo towards him, but Chief Quimby and his men appeared behind Pops, telling him to "hold it right there". Pops made a run for it, but a police officer was hot on his high heels.[14]
Together with Squirt, Pops served as part of the ground crew for the jets that had been stolen from Pancake Flats Air Force base and taken to a secret M.A.D. hideout. Dr. Claw had put several of the base's pilots under his control using hypnotism. The pilots were gathered together in one room where they could receive regular follow-up injections with a mind-controlling drug. Pops was waiting outside while Squirt tended to the pilots. When Penny stole one of the jets, using her computer book, both agents reported to Claw in person. When Claw pounced his fist on his desk, Squirt jumped into Pop's arms. Claw told them to send the other pilots after the stolen jet and shoot it down. The agents gave the M.A.D. salute (a fist to the head). Back in the office where the pilots were still waiting, Squirt noticed that the mind control drugs were missing. He wanted to tell the boss, but Pops thought that would be crazy and that the pilots would return before it wore off. They sent the pilots out and reported to Claw, who was angered to hear they didn't receive another dose. Indeed, the drugs soon wore off and the pilots returned to base.[15]
Abdul and Pops were tasked to spring Nervous Nick DeFecto out of jail after he turned himself in to the police to defect from M.A.D. Together they dug a tunnel that led straight into DeFecto's jail cell. When Dr. Claw contacted them, he told them they weren't progressing fast enough, and the two agents doubled their efforts. Emerging through the floor into DeFecto's cell, they glared at him menacingly as he cowered against the bars, calling for help. Help came from Gadget's niece Penny]], who used her computer book to open the cell door to let Nick out, then slammed it in Abdul and Pop's faces, causing them to fall back into the hole they had exited. They retreated, and came out of a manhole in the street, only to be contacted by Claw again. Both of them gave the M.A.D. salute (a fist to the head) simultaneously, and nervously confessed that Nick had gotten away.
Later, Pops was identified as "Agent 1" by Claw and was told to set off explosives as soon as Gadget and DeFecto, in the Gadget Van, had crossed the bridge to the Old Ice Factory Claw was using as his current hideout. With a wicked chuckle, Pops promised that Gadget and DeFecto would be buried under tons of rock. However, Gadget decided to exit his van in the middle of the bridge and wait for the Chief. When the bridge started to open up, Gadget was caught in the middle and found himself dragged along by a steamboat, all the while being stretched out as his legs remained attached to the bridge. Pops observed the entire scene from a distance and decided it was fine with him if someone else wanted to do the dirty work for him. Gadget was saved by his dog, Brain (disguised as a construction worker) and Pops went back to his original plan, but once again Penny took control of the detonator by remote and caused the explosion to go off before the Gadget Van was in range. Despite trying to explain that he hadn't even pressed the detonator, Pops was once again scolded for his failure by Dr. Claw.[16]
Pops and Dick arrived at a cave in Fezzug by helicopter to help Louise Lane retrieve the lost treasure. They descended in a metal basket hanging from the copter, loaded it with gold and jewels, and together with Lane they got back in, so that they could be pulled back up. The trio was unaware that Penny had grabbed onto the underside of the basket so she could escape from the cave as well. Penny then used her computer book to take control of the helicopter, leading it to crash against the side of a mountain. Lane, Pops and Dick escaped by parachute while the treasure came raining down from the sky. On the ground, the three agents tried to pick up as many of the gold coins as they could, but the Fierce Ones arrived on the scene and stopped them.[17]
Pops posed as an airline stewardess with a M.A.D. logo on the cap. When Gadget came up to Pop's desk to buy a ticket to Alpakistan, Pops, speaking with a higher voice, asked if the Inspector wanted a smoking or non-smoking seat.[18]
For the first of eight crimes to celebrate M.A.D.'s eight anniversary, Pops posed as a caterer at the Metro City Museum. He dropped several smokebombs, creating chaos while Dick used a large claw to grab the fabulous Clopman Diamond and replace it with a fake. Pops left a calling card behind the shape of a birthday cake candle with M.A.D. on it. The two of them sped off in the caterer's truck, unaware that Penny had attached a tracking device to the underside.[19]
Pops was stationed in the control room at Noodleman's Clinic. When Inspector Gadget was given a treatment into the high-speed whirlpool, Corporal Capeman joined him unexpectedly and caused the pool to clog up and the machines in the control room to short-circuit. Pops and Dr. Noodleman could only look on in surprise as their machinery failed.[20]
In a news report, Pops was seen being arrested by Gadget and Capeman after they thwarted a M.A.D. robbery of the world's largest bank[21]
Pops and a female agent were specially trained by Dr. Spectrum to pose as "Ghost Catchers". Spectrum would release his fake ghosts, called Ghost Globules, receive a call for help and the two agents would dress as Ghost Catchers and make the Globules disappear by spraying them with rented cooking oil. Their latest target was a mansion where a costume ball was being held. When Inspector Gadget arrived at the mansion, Spectrum told the two agents to eliminate Gadget before the ghost arrived. The agents tried to one-up each other. She suggested poisoning his canapé. Pops asked Spectrum to be allowed to use an exploding cork on Gadget. Then the female agent said she'd dance the "Tango of Death" with the Inspector, which startled Pops, who admitted he couldn't bear to watch that. Spectrum ordered them to stop arguing and do all of those things.
Posing as part of the catering staff, Pops offered Gadget a complimentary bottle of champagne. When the Inspector began to shake it, he panicked and grabbed it from him. He opened the bottle, but Gadget activated his Gadget Brella, causing the spray of champagne to hit Pops in the face. Pops offered Gadget the champagne cork. When Gadget refused, Pops insisted, distracted him by shouting and made a run for the kitchen. But Brain, in a ballerina costume, grabbed the cork from Gadget and threw it after Pops. It flew over his head and into the kitchen, where it exploded, leaving the female agent smoking and torn. A short while later, the female agent appeared to have more success with her Tango of Death, managing to push Gadget off a balcony. When they reported back to Spectrum, they began to argue again, with Pops insisting he almost had Gadget with his cork, to which the other agent replied that Pops' own head was full of cork. Spectrum interrupted them and told them to get into their Ghost Catchers costumes, as he was about to release the Globules.
The agents got into their jumpsuits and wore gasmasks in their guises as Ghost Catchers. When they burst into the ballroom, both were surprised to see that Inspector Gadget, alive and well, was already chasing the ghosts. Brain, wearing a white sheet, bumped into them, causing them to drop their Ghost Catcher Guns. The two agents annoyed each other so much that they forgot all about Gadget and began to fight each other. They eventually tired each other out and were taken into custody when Chief Quimby and his men arrived.[22]
Pops and Fred accompanied Thelma Bodkin on a trip back in time to ancient Rome. Once there, they acquired a horse drawn cart to get around. After Gadget survived being thrown to the lions, Thelma ordered the two male agents to take Gadget and his ancestor Gadgetorum on a tour and to make sure they did not survive. Speaking with an Italian accent, Pops offered the two Gadgets a tour of Rome they would never forget. Arriving at a viaduct, he told them to climb to the top, where sandwiches would be waiting. Pops pushed Gadget off the viaduct while Fred picked up Gadgetorum and tossed him over. The two of them did a little victory dance afterwards while their victims landed in the water. Later, they were joined by Thelma, and spotted the two Gadgets on the street. Inspector Gadget wanted to continue the tour, and he and his ancestor were taken to the Circus Maximus, to compete in a chariot race against Pops and Fred. During the race, the Pops tried to his Gadget with a whip and Fred removed one of the wheels on the Gadgets charior with a trident. Inspector gadget returned the favor and used a saw to cut off one of their wheels. The M.A.D. Agents then jumped chariot and took over another one, driven by Brain. While turning a corner, they slammed into a wall and Fred was catapulted out of the chariot. On his own Pops was unable to keep up with the Gadgets, especially after Inspector Gadget deployed his Gadget Wind Sail to win the race.[23]
A clip of Pops and Jarvis attempting to assassinate Inspector Gadget by firing a laser at him from a submarine while the Inspector was relaxing on the beach was shown at a Police Convention in honor of Gadget.[24]
