Inspector Gadget Wiki

"The Ruby" is the 10th episode of the first season of Inspector Gadget. It is the 30th episode in production order.

Synopsis[]

While riding through Metro City in the Gadgetmobile with Penny and Brain, Gadget receives another assignment from Quimby: He has to go to India to recover Big Red, a sacred ruby that Dr. Claw has stolen to use to power a laser that can destroy satellites. Of course, Penny and Brain then follow Gadget to India.

In India, Gadget gets himself in a bunch of trouble, such as touching a sacred cow, hitting the statue of Shiva, and ending up in jail before managing to escape with the help of an elephant. M.A.D. agents try to get rid of Gadget, but his own dumb luck and Brain's interference stop them.

Meanwhile, Penny finds a temple which is Claw's hideout, where Professor Lasre is working on the laser-powered up by the ruby. Mistaking the fake ruby on Brain's disguise for the real one, Gadget chases Brain to the temple. Claw's Robot Monks capture Gadget and Claw fires the laser at the inspector, only for Penny to override the monk robots' control, saving her uncle.

Gadget finds the laser, but mistakes it for a telescope and decides to see the satellites through the "telescope". Professor Lasre then starts to fire up the laser. To put a stop to Claw's scheme and save her uncle, Penny switches the ruby with the fake one, which causes an explosion.

Before jumping out of the lab by the window, Penny drops the ruby and, after the explosion, lands in front of Gadget just as Chief Quimby arrives to congratulate Gadget for thwarting Dr. Claw's plan, while Claw escapes in his M.A.D. Jet, angrily vowing revenge on Gadget for destroying his laser.

The episode concludes with advice on how to treat a minor burn, after Gadget accidentally burns his oven mitt during a backyard barbecue with Penny and Brain, instead using the thongs.

Trivia[]

  • This episode introduces a custom DiC Entertainment closing logo, featuring Inspector Gadget skating by and dotting the "i" in "D.i.C" with his Gadget Mallet. The episodes prior to this one used the standard DiC "Vortex" closing logo, and after this the series would alternate between both logos before permanently sticking with the custom "Gadget Mallet" logo starting with "Gone Went the Wind". (only to revert back to the DiC "Vortex" logo for the second season.) This is also the first episode in production order to use the custom DiC logo.
  • Starting with this episode, the closing credit sequence is revised with the credit text redone in a larger and bolder typeface, making them easier to read compared to in prior episodes where the credits were much smaller, to the point where at some points they could be nearly impossible to read. Some episodes after this would alternate in using the older smaller-typeface end credits before permanently sticking with the revised credits.
